Delavan Education Foundation has a Productive Year

The primary purpose of the DEF and Delavan Dollars for Scholars is to provide funds for projects and scholarships for Delavan Schools’ students. This year $2,845.00 was distributed for projects and scholarships. Funding was used for Camp-Read-A-Lot, an elementary school program featuring an evening of reading, story telling, and fun, as well as an FM hearing aid augmentation system to be used by hearing impaired students. A DEF logo contest was conducted; Valerie Martin, winning logo, won $50.00. Most Creative contributor, Abby Green, won $25.00, and contributors earning Honorable Mentions, Riley Steen, Madelyn Brockhouse, and Carter Summers, each received $10.00. Two high school seniors, Kyle Teal and Kody Nelson, were each awarded $500.00 Dollars for Scholars scholarships. DEF and the Alumni Association once again joined their funds and the winner of that scholarship will be announced at the Alumni Banquet.

During the 2008 – 2009 school year, DEF mailed informational materials to Delavan alumni regarding DEF and Delavan Dollars for Scholars (a sub-organization of DEF affiliated with Illinois Dollars for Scholars and Scholarship America which promotes community scholarships for post-secondary education). DEF received numerous donations from across the country. The Delavan Dollars for Scholars was also awarded a $1500 Illinois Challenge Grant that matched $1500 that DEF and Delavan Dollars for Scholars raised.

DEF organized the third annual Delavan Community Sale March 28th, a cold rainy day. Despite the weather, DEF realized a profit of nearly $1200 from commissions and donated items.

Among the new projects DEF is developing is the creation of a Wish List from proposals made by Delavan Schools’ faculty and staff. These proposals will be posted on the new DEF website, www.delavaneducationfoundation.wordpress.com for donors to view. Donors then select the wishes to financially support. DEF will continue to consider proposals with more immediate funding needs at their regular meetings.

The last meeting of the Delavan Education Foundation (DEF) 2008-2009 school year was May 26th. Board members met with Ms. Julie Faires, Delavan Jr. High and High School guidance counselor. DEF and the counseling office are developing a plan to work together for students.

Members also elected officers for the 2009-2010 year: Wendy Schweigert (President), Walt Dare (Vice President), Paul Adair (Treasurer), Dee Rummel (Secretary). Returning board members are Bob Culbertson, Glenn Holmes, Sue Howard, Catherine Guebert, Jerry Parker, Missy Schmitz, and Lona Sipka .
